Carabao Horn Art

Few creatures are as essentially Filipino as the endemic species of water buffalo we know as the Carabao. This strong, steadfast and (mostly) calm animal serves as a puller of carts and wagons, a plower of farmers’ fields, and an all-around beast of burden, as well as an occasional source of meat. Over the years, various programs and projects within both the public and private sectors have endeavored to ensure the wider distribution and continued viability of the species.

One of the most distinctive physical characteristics of mature carabaos is their pair of long curving horns. These can be a fearsome natural weapon for an angered animal. Far more commonly, though, these are trimmed off without pain or harm to the carabao, resulting in a versatile, incredibly durable material that can be put to myriad uses: shaped into knife handles, knitting needles, wind instruments, chopsticks, buttons or cufflinks, just to name a few.
